The postman has just delivered 'another' reminder from the NHS for me to get a fourth covid jab. Like the first it was three pages of A4 in 29 different languages. They have our (land line) phone number, surely a phone call would be a damned sight cheaper and quicker than two letters containing 6 pages of A4 translated into 29 different languages?

The NHS suffers from many examples of costly waste and inefficiency — though with taxpayer and borrowing funding its patchy and diminishingly effective operation, it will never really go bankrupt. If government steps in to examine what's happening and then suggests efficiencies, past examples show it will do so in such a cack-handed way that staff, patients and the public will react negatively. There obviously needs to be a root and branch reorganisation. But this can only work if it gets the agreement of, and input from, the staff (admin and medical) and patients. Plus, it should be recognised that improvements will need to be phased in over a period that's probably going to be way longer than the life of any government...
